Feature Wall Ideas for Kellyville and Box Hill New Builds

New-build homes in Kellyville, North Kellyville and Box Hill tend to share a look: open-plan living, light rendered exteriors, and large, fairly plain internal walls. That blank-canvas feel is exactly why feature walls have become one of our most requested jobs in these suburbs — a single wall can change the whole feel of a room without a full renovation.

Slat and timber batten walls

Vertical timber battens are the most popular request we get from newer Kellyville and Box Hill homes, and for good reason — they suit the clean, modern lines of contemporary floor plans. Common spots:

• Bedheads — battens run floor-to-ceiling or as a shorter panel behind the bed, often with a wall light built in
• Entryways — a batten wall opposite the front door makes a strong first impression without needing much floor space
• TV walls — battens either side of (or behind) the TV break up a large, flat living room wall

Battens work in natural timber tones for a warmer look, or painted to match (or contrast with) the rest of the room for a more graphic effect.

VJ panelling

VJ (vertical joint) panelling gives a more classic, slightly coastal look that pairs well with the Hamptons-inspired facades common in some Box Hill and Kellyville estates. It's typically painted rather than left raw, and works well:

• As a full-height treatment in a hallway or study
• Half-height with a picture rail cap, in a dining or living room
• In a home office or study nook, where it adds texture without competing with shelving or a desk

Picture rail and painted panel effects

For a lower-cost option that still lifts a plain wall, a picture rail with a painted panel effect below it is a good middle ground — no timber supply needed, mostly paint and trim work. This suits main bedrooms and dining rooms particularly well in the newer Kellyville and North Kellyville estates where ceiling heights are generous.

What to check before you commit

• Estate covenants. Some newer estates have design guidelines that technically only cover external changes, but it's worth a quick check if you're in a strata townhouse rather than a standalone home.
• Wall type. Most new builds use standard plasterboard on timber or steel stud — straightforward for fixing battens or panelling, but always worth confirming stud spacing before ordering materials.
• Paint finish. A low-sheen or matte finish tends to hide fixing lines better than a gloss finish on painted panelling.
